엄태영 이사장은 남면 부상, 자연이 풍부한 고향에서 농부의 아들로 태어나 2남 4녀 중 셋째로 성장했다. 묵밥과 두부로 유명한 이 지역에서 자라며, 가족의 소중함과 교육의 중요성을 일찍부터 깨달았다. 현재는 교육계에 종사하는 배우자와 대학생인 자녀 두 명과 함께, 가족을 중심으로 한 삶을 이어가고 있다.

새마을금고와의 첫걸음,뿌리 깊은 금융 여정의 시작

1989년, 용호동 새마을금고에 입사하며 금융계에 첫발을 디딘 이사장은 고등학교 졸업 후 가족 사업을 돕다가 이 경험을 통해 금융에 대한 관심을 키워나갔다. 입사 당시 작은 규모였던 금고를 상무로 퇴직할 때까지 자산 규모 100억원의 기관으로 성장시키는 데 중추적 역할을 했다.

법률사무소에서의 휴식기, 다양한 경험의 축적

새마을금고를 잠시 떠나 2004년부터 2011년까지는 법률사무소에서 근무하며 다양한 경험을 쌓았다. 이 기간 동안 법률 분야의 지식을 습득하고, 이사장으로 출마한 경험도 얻었다. 이러한 배움은 금고 경영에 새로운 시각을 제공하는 근간이 되었다.

새마을금고 이사장으로서의 혁신과 성장

2012년 1월 취임 이후, 엄 이사장은 지좌, 금산, 자산금고 합병을 이끌며 규모의 경제를 실현했다. 복귀 당시 자산 300억원에서 출발해 합병 후 자산을 900억원으로 확대하는 대업을 달성했다. 혁신도시에 최초로 지점을 개설하고 텃밭을 제공하는 등 공공기관 이전 주민의 조기 정착을 돕는 등 금융 혁신을 선도했다.

사회적 기여, 봉사 활동과 지역사회 발전을 위한 노력

엄 이사장은 취임 후 회원들에게 법률적 필요를 충족시키기 위하여 소유권 이전, 상속 등의 서류 작성 지원을 포함한 법률 서비스를 제공하기 시작했다. 본인은 또한 다빈봉사단 MG천사회 및 산악회를 조직하여, 지역사회 및 소외계층을 위한 다양한 봉사 활동을 전개하고 있다.

다빈봉사단은 장애인 복지회관에서의 정기적인 봉사활동, 농촌 일손 돕기, 장애인 가정의 환경 정비 등을 수행하며, MG천사회는 회원들이 매월 천 원씩 기부하여 북한 이탈 주민 지원, 장애인 가정 지원, 소년소녀가장 지원, 독거노인 보살핌 등의 활동을 펼치고 있으며, 이는 전국적으로 유일한 조직으로 알려져 있다.

사회복지법인 한마음나눔회의 회장으로서 2023년부터 활동하며, 시각장애인, 중증장애인 자립 지원, 음악 봉사, 음식 나눔 봉사 등을 통해 다양한 소외 계층을 지원하고 있다. 특히, 삼계탕 등의 음식을 직접 준비하여 나눔을 실천하고 있다.

김천시 새마을협의회의 회장으로서 2016년부터 2019년 4월까지 재임하였으며, 좀도리 사업을 통해 매년 500만 원에서 700만 원을 투입하여 읍면동의 추천을 받은 경로당, 독거노인, 장애인, 시각장애인 협회, 낙병병 장애인 협회 등 저소득층에 백미를 지원하였다. 또한, 김천시각장애인복지대회 지원 등을 통해 장애인들을 위한 관심과 지원을 지속하고 있다.

코로나19 팬데믹 기간 동안에는 특별히 고생하는 보건소 직원들을 위해 위로품을 전달하였으며, 김천시인재양성재단에 장학금을 기탁하는 등의 활동을 수행했다.

새마을금고의 문화 활동은 회원들의 건강과 교류를 위한 다양한 프로그램을 제공한다. 노래교실, 필라테스, 스크린골프 등을 통해 회원들에게 건강한 여가 생활을 제공하며, 이사장배 스크린골프대회 개최를 통해 화합의 장을 마련한다. 또한 '미래전략발전위원회'를 구성해 새마을금고의 지속 가능한 발전을 위한 다양한 의견을 취합하고 있다.

동부새마을금고와의 합병으로 김천 최대 금고로 도약

지난해, 동부새마을금고와의 합병을 통해 금고는 2022년 2,000억 원이던 자산을 2,300억 원(지점 6개 포함)으로 크게 증가시켜 김천에서 가장 큰 금고의 위치를 확고히 했다. '알찬새마을금고'로 명명 후 금고는 지역을 초월한 도전적인 영업 전략을 통해 더욱 발전하고자 하는 포부를 담고 있다.

활발한 사회 활동과 공적

김천민주평화통일자문회의에서 자문위원, 분과위원을 역임하고 18기 회장을 맡은 바 있는 이사장은 대통령 표창을 수상하며 그 공로를 인정받았다. 김천라이온스회 회장, 국제라이온스클럽 356-E지구 사무총장,김천새마을회 이사(전),자산동 지역사회보장협의체위원장,김천경찰서안보자문위원(현),김천시일일명예시장(전),8기 경북 청년도민감사관(현),한국재능기부봉사단 전문위원(현),새마을금고 중앙회 대의원(현)등을 포함해 다양한 사회적 직책을 수행하며 지역사회 발전에 기여해왔다.

꿈과 미래 비전

이사장은 현재 맡은 일에 전념하며 새마을금고의 규모 확대와 내실 강화에 집중하고 있다. 그러나 지역사회 발전을 위한 새로운 기회가 주어진다면, 어떠한 일도 마다하지 않을 준비가 되어 있다고 밝혔다.

새마을금고 회원과 시민에게 전하는 메시지

새마을금고는 예금자 보호에 최선을 다하는 금융기관임을 강조하며, 매년 예금자보호준비금을 중앙회에 납입하여 예적금 합계액의 0.15%를 적립, 예금자의 자산을 철저히 보호하고 있다고 말했다. 엄 이사장은 금고 회원의 이익환원 사업을 늘려 고객만족을 실현하고, 믿고 자산을 맡길 수 있는 금고를 만들어 나갈 것을 약속했다. MG새마을금고가 서민금융기관으로서 시민들의 생활에 더 밀착하고, 그들의 요구에 부응해 나가겠다는 포부를 밝혔다.

Chairman Eom Tae-young, Raised with the Soil of Nammyeon

Chairman Eom Tae-young grew up in the agriculturally rich and nature-abundant area of Nammyeon, as the third child among two brothers and four sisters, born to a farming family. Raised in a region known for its mukbap (rice soup) and tofu, he learned the importance of family and education from an early age. He now continues his life centered around his family, with his spouse who works in the education sector, and their two children who are university students.

The Beginning with Saemaul Geumgo, A Deep-rooted Financial Journey

Starting his financial career in 1989 by joining the Yongho-dong Saemaul Geumgo right after high school and helping with the family business, Chairman Eom developed an interest in finance. He played a crucial role in growing the institution from a modest scale to an entity with assets of 10 billion won by the time he left as an executive.

A Break at a Law Office, Accumulating Diverse Experiences

Taking a brief hiatus from Saemaul Geumgo, he worked at a law office from 2004 to 2011, gaining a wide range of experiences. During this period, he acquired knowledge in legal affairs and even ran for chairman, experiences that provided a new perspective on managing the financial institution.

Innovation and Growth as Chairman of Saemaul Geumgo

Since taking office in January 2012, Chairman Eom led the mergers with Jijwa, Geumsan, and Jasang Geumgo, achieving economies of scale. He successfully expanded the assets from 30 billion won at the time of his return to 900 billion won after the mergers. He also spearheaded financial innovation by opening the first branch in the innovation city and providing community gardens to assist early settlement of residents from public institutions.

Social Contribution, Volunteer Activities, and Efforts for Community Development

After his inauguration, Chairman Eom started providing legal services, including property transfer and inheritance documentation, to meet the legal needs of the members. He also organized the Dabin Volunteer Group and MG Angels Association, as well as a hiking club, to conduct various volunteer activities for the community and underserved populations.

The Dabin Volunteer Group engages in regular volunteering at the Disabled Welfare Center, rural work assistance, and environment maintenance for disabled families. The MG Angels Association, known for being a unique organization nationwide, gathers monthly donations from members to support North Korean defectors, disabled families, youth orphans, and elderly living alone.

As chairman of the Social Welfare Corporation Hanmaum Sharing Association since 2023, he supports various marginalized groups through visual impairment, severe disability support centers, music volunteering, and food sharing activities, often preparing and sharing meals like samgyetang himself.

Serving as the chairman of the Gimcheon Saemaul Association from 2016 to April 2019, he led the Jomdori project, annually investing 5 to 7 million won to support low-income groups with rice donations based on recommendations from local governments. He has also continued to support the disabled community, including sponsoring the Gimcheon Visually Impaired Welfare Festival.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he specially delivered comfort items to health center workers and donated scholarships to the Gimcheon Talent Development Foundation, among other activities.

Beyond Financial Innovation, Alchan Saemaul Geumgo's Practice of Social Responsibility

Saemaul Geumgo's cultural activities offer various programs for the health and social interaction of its members, such as singing classes, Pilates, and screen golf, including organizing a chairman's screen golf tournament to foster unity. Additionally, the "Future Strategy Development Committee" has been established to gather diverse opinions for the sustainable development of Saemaul Geumgo.

Leap to Becoming Gimcheon's Largest Geumgo through Merger with Dongbu Saemaul Geumgo

Last year's merger with Dongbu Saemaul Geumgo propelled our institution from assets of 200 billion won in 2022 to 230 billion won (including 6 branches), firmly establishing us as the largest Geumgo in Gimcheon. Named "Alchan Saemaul Geumgo," the institution aims for further growth with ambitious, region-transcending business strategies.

Active Social Activities and Public Recognition

Chairman Eom has served as an advisor and subcommittee member, and also as the 18th chairman of the Gimcheon Peace and Unification Advisory Council, for which he was awarded a Presidential Commendation. His roles have included President of the Gimcheon Lions Club, Secretary-General of the International Lions Club District 356-E, former director of the Gimcheon Saemaul Association, chairman of the Jasan-dong Community Welfare Committee, current security advisory member for the Gimcheon Police Station, former honorary mayor of Gimcheon, current 8th generation Gyeongbuk Young Citizens' Auditor, current specialist member of the Korea Talent Donation Volunteer Group, and current delegate of the Saemaul Geumgo Central Association, contributing significantly to the development of the community.

Dreams and Future Vision

The chairman is dedicated to his current responsibilities, focusing on expanding the scale and strengthening the internal stability of Saemaul Geumgo. However, he has stated that he is ready to embrace any new opportunities for the development of the local community.

Message to Saemaul Geumgo Members and Citizens

Chairman Eom emphasizes that Saemaul Geumgo is a financial institution committed to the protection of depositors, annually contributing to the depositors' protection fund to the Central Association, reserving 0.15% of the total amount of deposits and savings, to ensure the thorough protection of depositors' assets. He has promised to increase member benefit projects, such as scholarship programs and dividends, to achieve customer satisfaction and to build a trustable financial institution. He expressed his ambition for MG Saemaul Geumgo to become more closely integrated with the lives of the citizens and to meet their needs as a community financial institution.
